Why do you need a racon?

A racon is a microwave device which sends a response to any interrogating radar within range which is then displayed on the vessels radar screen as a locally unique Morse Code character that confirms the identity, position, and function of the AtoN. There are many different uses for a racon including marking the Fairway buoy in a channel, marking hazards such as rocks and shipwrecks, marking borders and boundaries, marking channels under bridges, and marking offshore platforms and structures. A racon is the only piece of equipment which can provide absolute ship positioning information in a way that is not possible with satellite-based systems. Therefore, for an application where providing 100% accurate positional data is essential, regardless of weather conditions, there really is no option but a racon.
